How Does Water Treatment Work? Steps, Chemicals & Methods

Water treatment works by removing suspended solids, dissolved impurities and microorganisms through a sequence of physical and chemical steps — coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection — so the water is safe for drinking, industrial use or discharge. Each step relies on specific treatment chemicals.

The main steps of water treatment

  • Coagulation — a coagulant (PAC, PFS or alum) neutralizes the charge on fine suspended particles.
  • Flocculation — a flocculant (PAM) bridges the destabilized particles into large, settle-able flocs.
  • Sedimentation & filtration — flocs settle out and the water passes through filters.
  • Disinfection — a biocide (TCCA, SDIC) kills remaining microorganisms.
  • Scale & corrosion control — in industrial loops, antiscalants and corrosion inhibitors protect equipment.

Industrial vs municipal water treatment

Municipal treatment focuses on clarification and disinfection for drinking water. Industrial water treatment adds scale and corrosion control for cooling water, boilers and reverse-osmosis (RO) systems, using antiscalants such as ATMP and HEDP.

Which chemicals are used?

The main families are coagulants & flocculants, scale inhibitors (antiscalants), corrosion inhibitors, biocides, dispersants and oxygen scavengers. See the full water treatment chemicals guide.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 5 steps of water treatment?

Coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. Industrial systems add scale and corrosion control.

What chemicals are used in water treatment?

Coagulants (PAC, PFS, alum), flocculants (PAM), antiscalants (ATMP, HEDP, PBTC), corrosion inhibitors, biocides (TCCA, SDIC) and oxygen scavengers.

What is the difference between coagulation and flocculation?

Coagulation neutralizes particle charge; flocculation bridges the particles into large flocs that settle quickly.
