Why use a phosphonate salt instead of the acid?

The neutralized sodium or potassium salt of a phosphonate provides the same scale inhibition and metal-ion chelation as the parent acid, but at near-neutral pH — so it is less corrosive to dosing pumps and pipework and easier and safer to handle where a ready-to-use, low-acidity feed is required.

Do phosphonate salts work as well as the acids?

Yes. The active phosphonate ion is the same; only the neutralizing cation differs. The salt forms are dosed on an as-active basis and give equivalent carbonate, sulfate and phosphate scale control and corrosion inhibition in cooling water, boilers and oilfield systems.
