DTPMP Scale Inhibitor: Uses, Dosage & Comparison
DTPMP — diethylenetriamine penta(methylene phosphonic acid), CAS 15827-60-8 — is a high-efficiency scale and corrosion inhibitor and chelating agent whose five phosphonic-acid groups keep working in high-temperature (up to ~210 °C) and high-alkalinity water where most phosphonates fail. It is dosed at low ppm in cooling water, boilers and oilfield systems and also stabilizes peroxide and chlorine dioxide.
What is DTPMP?
DTPMP (also written DTPMPA / DETPMP) is a nitrogen-containing organic polyphosphonic acid built on a diethylenetriamine backbone carrying five methylene-phosphonic-acid groups. Those five groups give it exceptional metal-ion chelation and threshold scale inhibition. It is supplied as a light-yellow liquid acid and as the neutralized sodium salt (DTPMP·Na) where a low-acidity, ready-to-use feed is preferred.
Why DTPMP excels at high temperature and high pH
Unlike simpler phosphonates, DTPMP stays effective in alkaline circulating water and at temperatures above 200 °C. It chelates calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium and inhibits carbonate, sulfate and phosphate scale (CaCO₃, BaSO₄, SrSO₄) at sub-stoichiometric — parts-per-million — concentrations. Its strong complexing power also makes it a stabilizer for hydrogen peroxide and chlorine-dioxide disinfectants.

DTPMP dosage
In circulating cooling water DTPMP is typically dosed at 1–15 ppm (mg/L) as active, adjusted to hardness, temperature and cycles of concentration. For corrosion protection it is combined with zinc salts, polyphosphates or AA/AMPS copolymers. Because it works over a wide temperature and pH range, DTPMP is a strong choice where ATMP or HEDP lose performance.
