RO Membrane Cleaning: Acid & Alkaline Cleaners
RO membranes are cleaned with a low-pH acid cleaner for carbonate scale and metal oxides, and a high-pH alkaline cleaner for organic and biological fouling. Cleaning restores flux and rejection.
Acid vs alkaline
- Acid (low pH): WT-260 — carbonate scale, iron/metal oxides.
- Alkaline (high pH): WT-261 — organics, colloids, biofilm.
- Non-stop: WT-701 for online cleaning.
Follow with a biocide flush (DBNPA) where biofouling is present.
Frequently asked questions
How do you clean RO membranes?
Use a low-pH acid cleaner for scale/metals and a high-pH alkaline cleaner for organics/biofouling, typically alkaline first when both are present.
How often should RO membranes be cleaned?
When normalized flux drops ~10–15% or differential pressure rises; frequency depends on feedwater and fouling.
