Biodegradable Chelating Agents — EDTA Alternative (GLDA, MGDA)
TL;DR MGDA and GLDA are chelant options when a buyer needs a different biodegradation profile from EDTA. Compare the exact grade's metal binding, pH range, formulation concentration, temperature and performance in the intended cleaning or process solution. Ask for the supplier's biodegradation method and result rather than treating a chemical-family label as a product-level guarantee. A bench comparison on the actual water and metal load helps determine the choice before changing the full process.
Why replace EDTA
EDTA is poorly biodegradable and increasingly restricted. GLDA (from natural glutamic acid) and MGDA chelate metals as effectively across a wide pH range while being readily biodegradable.

Applications
Detergents and I&I cleaners, textile and bleaching, water treatment chelation. Strong phosphonate chelants like DTPMP and EDTMPA remain options where biodegradability is not required.

Frequently asked questions
What can replace EDTA?
Biodegradable aminopolycarboxylates GLDA and MGDA are the main EDTA replacements, with similar chelation but much better biodegradability.
Is GLDA biodegradable?
GLDA is commonly selected for its biodegradation profile, but check the exact product's composition and test report against the requirement in your market. Compare cleaning or chelation performance with MGDA and EDTA under the same water and pH conditions.
