Oily Wastewater Treatment — PAC + PAM Flocculation

This jar-test video shows oily wastewater treatment by coagulation–flocculation: dosing PAC (poly aluminium chloride) and a trace of PAM (polyacrylamide) makes emulsified oil and suspended solids rapidly form large, dense flocs that separate within seconds, leaving clear water. VCYCLETECH manufactures the PAC and PAM used here.

What you'll see in this video

  • Milky, emulsified oily wastewater in the beaker before treatment.
  • Dosing PAC + PAM and the rapid formation of large, dense flocs.
  • Oil and suspended solids separating cleanly to leave clear water on top.

How PAC + PAM break an oil emulsion

Stable oily wastewater is an emulsion: fine oil droplets carry a negative surface charge that keeps them dispersed. A cationic coagulant such as PAC neutralizes that charge so droplets can coalesce (demulsification); then a high-molecular-weight PAM flocculant bridges the destabilized droplets and solids into large, fast-rising/settling flocs. For tough emulsions an organic coagulant like PolyDADMAC or polyamine is added ahead of PAC.

Typical dosing sequence

  • 1) (Optional) organic coagulant / demulsifier to break the emulsion.
  • 2) PAC — neutralize charge and coagulate oil + colloids (jar-test the dose).
  • 3) PAM — flocculate into large flocs; float or settle and separate.

Applications

Oilfield produced/refinery water, machinery and metalworking coolant wastewater, food and edible-oil effluent, and other emulsified-oil streams — see oilfield water treatment and municipal & industrial wastewater. Run a jar test to set the dose.
