How to Prepare a 0.1% Polyacrylamide (PAM) Solution — Lab Guide
This lab guide shows how to prepare a 0.1% polyacrylamide (PAM) solution correctly — the right way to dissolve PAM so it works as an effective flocculant in jar tests and full-scale dosing. VCYCLETECH is a China-based PAM manufacturer and supplier (anionic, cationic and nonionic grades).
How to prepare a 0.1% PAM solution (step by step)
- Ratio: 0.1% = 1 g PAM powder per 1 L of clean water (use 0.05–0.1% as the stock solution).
- Add slowly: sprinkle the PAM powder into the vortex of vigorously stirred water — never dump it in, or it forms "fish-eyes" (gel lumps).
- Stir gently: reduce speed and stir 30–60 min until fully dissolved and uniform; do not over-shear (it breaks the polymer chain).
- Age & use fresh: let it stand briefly to hydrate; use the stock solution within 24 h, diluting to the working dose at the point of addition.
Why correct preparation matters
Under-dissolved or over-sheared PAM loses most of its flocculating power. Proper make-up is the difference between clear supernatant and a failed jar test — which is why this step matters before scaling up.
Applications
PAM is the workhorse flocculant for municipal & mining wastewater, sludge dewatering, paper-mill effluent and clarification — usually after a coagulant such as PAC.
